Jointly Building a New Ecosystem for High-Quality Development of the Lonicera japonica Industry

On October 18, 2025, the launch ceremony of the ISO International Standard for Xupu Mountain Honeysuckle, along with the industry-production matchmaking meeting, was grandly held in Gezhuping Town, Xupu County. Attendees included Liu Liang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; He Zunqing, Deputy Secretary of the Huaihua Municipal Party Committee, Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee of the Municipal Party Committee, and Head of the Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Chain; Liu Xinmin, Vice Chairman of the National Alliance for Science and Technology Innovation in Food-Medicine Homology Industries; Zhang Shuihan, a Second-Level Researcher at the Institute of Chinese Medicinal Resources, Hunan Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Zhou Hua, Deputy Director of the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of TCM (Hengqin Laboratory), and other distinguished leaders and experts. Anchor the direction of industrial development Strengthening the Foundation of Industry Standards

Zheng Xiang, Secretary of the Xupu County Party Committee, delivers a welcome speech.

Zheng Xiang, Secretary of the Xupu County Party Committee, delivered the welcome speech first, expressing gratitude to the attending guests. He emphasized that Xupu would leverage this conference as a key opportunity to focus on upgrading the mountain silver flower industry—from cultivation to branding—and vigorously drive progress across all stages, ultimately transforming the region's unique industrial advantages into tangible achievements for rural revitalization.

Academician Liu Liang of the Chinese Academy of Engineering delivers a keynote speech.

Liu Liang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chair of ISO/TC249/SC1/WG1, delivered a keynote speech. He pointed out that the global ISO standard system for Traditional Chinese Medicine has already released 123 standards (including 86 related to Chinese medicinal materials). However, due to the ongoing "gold vs. mountain" debate over Shan Yin Hua and the lack of an international standard, high-quality resources from this herb have struggled to translate into market advantages. Citing examples such as Chengdu's Chuanxiong Rhizome (whose export unit price increased by 40% after adopting the ISO standard) and Zhejiang's Lingzhi mushroom (which saw its export value soar by 284.5%), Liu emphasized that an ISO standard for Shan Yin Hua would effectively address three major challenges: achieving industry-wide quality consensus, overcoming trade barriers, and enabling deeper integration across the supply chain. Currently, Xupu County boasts the largest Shan Yin Hua cultivation area in the province—spanning 131,000 mu—and its product boasts an impressive chlorogenic acid content of 9.1%, significantly exceeding the requirements set by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, thereby laying a solid foundation for the successful implementation of the upcoming ISO standard.

Representatives from the six counties (cities)—Xupu, Hongjiang, Zhongfang, Longhui, Chongqing Xiushan, and Suiyang in Guizhou—jointly signed the "Xupu Declaration on High-Quality Development of the Lonicera japonica Industry," outlining four key objectives: "Jointly build an industry alliance, jointly establish industry standards, jointly create a shared public brand, and jointly explore global markets." These initiatives aim to break down regional barriers and foster collaborative momentum for robust growth.

Expert-led courses empower industrial upgrades.

Professor Liu Xinmin, Vice Chairman of the National Alliance for Science and Innovation in Food-Medicine Homology Industries; Researcher Zhang Shuihan, a Second-Level Researcher at the Institute of Chinese Medicinal Resources, Hunan Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and Professor Zhou Hua, Deputy Director of the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hengqin Laboratory)—each delivered keynote speeches on the development of the Lonicera japonica industry. From the perspectives of scientific research technology, market trends, and standard implementation, they provided attendees with expert guidance, helping the industry enhance quality and boost efficiency.

Finally, he stressed that this initiative would further consolidate Huaihua's TCM industry resources, strengthen supply chain collaboration, and inject new momentum into building distinctive competitive advantages for the city's TCM sector, ultimately paving the way for high-quality development.

“Standard” + “Production and Sales”

Dual-wheel drive charts a new future for industry

The successful convening of the 2025 Xupu Mountain Honeysuckle ISO International Standards Launch and Production-Sales Matching Conference, coupled with the joint signing of the "Xupu Declaration" by three provinces and six counties, represents a vivid demonstration of how "standards" and "production-sales collaboration" can drive progress in tandem. From the perspective of "production and sales," the conference has established a cross-regional platform for connecting producers and buyers, while the "Xupu Declaration" breaks down county-level barriers, transforming the six counties from mere "competitors" into a "community of shared interests." This shift directly addresses the critical pain point of the "disconnect between production and sales" plaguing the mountain honeysuckle industry, enabling industry resources to move from fragmented competition toward collaborative integration—and laying a solid foundation for smoother supply-chain operations. From the standpoint of "standards," the launch of the ISO international standards marks a pivotal step forward in advancing the industry's journey toward standardization. The "Xupu Declaration" not only provides a breakthrough solution to the longstanding challenges of "inconsistent standards and fragmented branding" within the mountain honeysuckle sector but also propels Zhengqing Group from being merely a "leader in the industrial chain" to becoming an active "standard practitioner." Ultimately, this transformation empowers the industry to shift from passively adapting to market demands to proactively shaping industry standards—using unified criteria to elevate product quality and strengthen brand cohesion. These two pillars—standards and production-sales collaboration—complement each other and work in harmony, jointly paving the way for a brighter future across the entire mountain honeysuckle value chain.
