On September 18, the unveiling ceremony for the “Rheumatism and Pain Triple‑Sequential Therapy—Demonstration Site of the ‘Thousand Counties, Ten Thousand Towns’ Initiative” was held in the conference room on the 14th floor of the outpatient department at Xupu County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. This event represents another significant step taken by Academician Liu Liang’s Expert Workstation to bring high‑quality TCM resources down to the grassroots level, thereby supporting rural revitalization and enhancing specialized capabilities at the county level.

Li Yanping, deputy director of the Academician Liu Liang Expert Workstation, along with expert team members including Long Xianjun, project consultant to the workstation, as well as Feng Yongxia, member of the Party Leadership Group and deputy director of the Huaihua Municipal Medical Security Bureau; Zhang Jianfang, deputy county magistrate of Xupu County; Dai Jun, Party Secretary and Director of the Xupu County Health Commission; Wu Wei, Party Secretary of the Xupu County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital; and the hospital’s leadership team, were in attendance. Key representatives from medical institutions at all levels across the county also participated in the ceremony.

Wu Wei, Secretary of the Party Committee of Xupu County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, extended a warm welcome on behalf of the hospital to all the leaders and experts in attendance. He then provided a detailed briefing on the hospital’s development and construction, as well as on the implementation of the “Thousand Counties, Ten Thousand Towns” demonstration project for the rheumatism and pain triple‑sequential therapy. He stated that the hospital will seize this opportunity to leverage the technical expertise and talent pool of Academician Liu Liang’s team, continuously standardize clinical workflows, strengthen personnel training, and steadily enhance its specialized capacity in rheumatology and pain management, thereby delivering higher‑quality, more convenient TCM‑based health services to residents across the county.

In his address, Deputy Station Director Li Yanping highlighted that Academician Liu Liang’s team has consistently upheld the development philosophy of “using science and technology to deconstruct traditional Chinese medicine,” pioneering a new integrated model of diagnosis and treatment that combines Chinese and Western medicine. The team’s three‑step sequential therapy for rheumatic diseases and pain has been awarded the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Centered on active ingredients such as Qingfengteng and sinomenine, this approach boasts the advantages of simplicity, convenience, affordability, and proven efficacy—making it well suited for grassroots settings. To date, it has been implemented in over 20,000 medical institutions nationwide, benefiting countless patients with rheumatic conditions and chronic pain.

At the signing ceremony, Deputy Station Director Li Yanping and Dai Jun, Party Secretary and Director of the Xupu County Health Commission, jointly signed the “Cooperation Agreement on Bringing Academician‑Led Projects to the Grassroots.” Meanwhile, Chen Baisong, Regional Project Director for Central China at the Academician Liu Liang Expert Workstation, and Wu Wei, Party Secretary of the Xupu County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, executed the “Cooperation Agreement on the ‘Academician‑Led Projects to the Grassroots—Thousand Counties, Ten Thousand Towns Initiative’ Demonstration Site,” marking the official transition of their collaboration into the stage of concrete implementation.

Subsequently, the attending leaders and experts jointly unveiled the plaque for the Xupu County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital demonstration site under the “Academicians’ Project to the Grassroots—Thousand Counties, Ten Thousand Towns Initiative,” marking the official establishment of the demonstration site at Xupu County TCM Hospital.

Following the unveiling ceremony, the project’s advisory experts delivered specialized lectures and conducted hands-on demonstrations on the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic pain, as well as on the three‑pronged sequential therapy. The attending leaders also toured the academician‑led clinical care zone, gaining an in-depth understanding of its layout, equipment configuration, and post‑treatment service model. They offered constructive suggestions for optimizing clinical workflows and promoting the application of distinctive techniques, thereby clarifying the roadmap for the project’s future implementation.

The establishment of this demonstration site marks a new starting point for Xupu County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital as it pools resources, builds capacity, and elevates its development. Moving forward, the hospital will leverage the expertise of an academician‑led team to promote a three‑pronged sequential therapy for rheumatic and pain conditions, strengthen its specialized TCM services, strive to become a model for TCM development at the county level, create a new hub for primary‑care TCM services, and effectively safeguard the health of the county’s residents.
